Flipping the Classroom

One of the NETA sessions I attended was "Flipping the Classroom" which inspired me!!!  A teacher recorded videos for the students to watch at night.  When the students returned to the classroom the next day they were to have watched the video - this would allow for discussion or further explanations during class time and the most important part guided/independent practice time with a teacher present.  In a math classroom this is the most important part because as we know most parents can only help their children for so long.

If you are considering doing this here are the tips:
-- Keep the videos short - 10 minutes or less.
-- Invest in a good microphone
-- Highlight in the video specific points you want the students to learn.
-- Have students write questions as they watch.
-- Give a short quiz at the beginning of class so that you know if the majority of the class watched the video and if they didn't they could watch the video.
-- Not enough time to make your own videos - check out Khan Academy.
